Jurgen Klopp has again issued a warning to Liverpool FC fans concerning the club’s transfer business this summer. The Reds have been expected to not make any major additions to their squad in the ongoing transfer window. In the past too, Klopp has downplayed speculation that Liverpool FC would spend a considerable amount of money in order to strengthen the title-winning squad.
However, it seems as if the Reds’ supporters can anticipate a fairly quiet summer transfer window for their side. Despite constant rumors, no high-profile signings are expected to be made by the Reds. Names like Thiago Alcântara and Kalidou Koulibaly have been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks.
The financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a shattering blow for the Reds’ income. This is believed to be the primary cause for the inability of Klopp to make big moves in the transfer window.
Despite being considered the frontrunner in the race to sign Timo Werner, the Reds couldn’t finalize the deal. Liverpool FC withdrew interest in signing the German international citing pricing concerns over Werner’s £47.5 million release clause. The Reds’ approach was subsequently hijacked by Chelsea FC who have since then signed the player on a five-year deal.
And now, Klopp has stated that the current time is an uncertain one for football, with all games being held behind closed doors and matchday income being cut off completely. As a result, funds required to make highly-rated signings are hard to come by for Liverpool FC.
The Reds boss also added that buying a player in the current state of the market is extremely difficult. Klopp also explained Liverpool FC’s desire of curbing their spending this summer, with the German stating that the Merseyside club had spent very little last year as well.
Klopp could, however, make use of funds obtained from sales of Reds’ players this summer. Firs team members like Dejan Lovren and Xherdan Shaqiri are tipped to leave Anfield before the end of the ongoing transfer window. Sales of both these players could generate ample funds to be used by the Reds boss at his discretion.
