Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp defended Alexis Mac Allister, stating that the player didn’t deserve his red card in the match against Bournemouth.
Despite playing with fewer men after the South American’s dismissal, the Reds managed to recover and secure a 3-1 victory at Anfield on Saturday.
The Argentine, who joined Liverpool from Brighton in the summer, was sent off in the 58th minute, resulting in a three-match suspension for the midfielder.
The red card appeared to be a harsh decision, as even opposition manager Andoni Iraola admitted that it did not look like a red card incident.
Klopp shared these pointers and expressed his agreement with Iraola’s views. As quoted by ESPN, he said:
“I understand 100% how it looks for a ref in that moment but when you see it back, it is the inside of the foot and no power behind it.
“We saw harsher challenges which were not a red card and this shouldn’t have been one. I don’t know exactly what we have to do, but we should talk about it again.”
Liverpool found themselves trailing by a goal early in the match when Bournemouth took the lead in the opening five minutes.
Despite having a goal disallowed for offside, the Cherries managed to score through Antoine Semenyo in the third minute.
However, Liverpool made a strong comeback, with Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota scoring goals that secured the victory. Luis Diaz also contributed to Liverpool’s efforts by cancelling out Semenyo’s initial strike.
Mac Allister will miss the next three matches including an away game against Newcastle United, a home game against Aston Villa and an away game against Wolves.
