Liverpool FC’s resolve to dip into the ongoing January transfer window to add fresh faces to an injury-hit backline would be tested, admitted the Merseyside Reds gaffer Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp’s side was dealt a fresh blow with Joel Matip sustaining adductor strain injury in the 1-1 draw against West Brom, sidelining the Cameroonian international from appearing for the Reds over the next three weeks, with Matip’s layoff coming time after both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez being added to the potential season-ending recovery list.
And as football clubs across Europe head into the winter transfer window, Klopp admitted that he is unsure of whether the Premier League holders would seek to fortify their now-limited options in the centre-back spot by splashing the cash on potential defensive names linked with a move to Anfield.
‘We have solutions in the squad obviously but we struggled still with injuries. For most of the time with centre-half position, it can happen like this – when it starts, it does not stop’, said Klopp, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
‘We have solutions with the squad but if we can do something in the window, I don’t know. It is like that.
‘It is a very difficult transfer window, as you can imagine. Not all of the clubs have real money. Just doing something makes no sense.
‘Doing the right thing makes sense. So far, we have really liked what we have done.
Sven Botman is one potential target whose links to the Merseysiders has garnered a lot of interest in recent weeks amid reports suggesting that the Anfield outfit had commenced talks with Lille over signing the highly-rated Dutch starlet.
