Jurgen Klopp was keen on signing Edinson Cavani this summer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was keen on signing the veteran striker Edinson Cavani this summer from bitter rivals Manchester United.

Cavani’s future at Old Trafford beyond this summer’s transfer window had been subject to much speculation as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in the likes of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to bolster his attacking roster.

The Uruguayan international, however, did end up signing on extended terms with the Manchester United camp but reports from Spanish news outlet El Nacional have suggested that Liverpool were keeping close tabs on Cavani’s situation.

Jurgen Klopp was reportedly looking to make a move for the former Paris Saint-Germain man before he agreed to extend his stay at Old Trafford with United unwilling to part ways with him to sign for a rival club in the Premier League.

Klopp is likely to enter the forthcoming January transfer window with plans to add to his options in attack following a spell on the sidelines for Roberto Firmino who suffered a hamstring injury in the recent Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.
