Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that the Reds have “no intention” of letting star winger Xherdan Shaqiri leave the club this month in the January transfer market.
Swiss midfielder Shaqiri has been the subject of reported interest from quite a few European outfits including Serie A side Roma and LaLiga giants Sevilla, but the Premier League leaders thought to have already dismissed approaches for the 28-year-old.
Shaqiri has managed to make only six Premier League appearances this season, starting just twice for Klopp’s team. This is far less than his first season when he managed to feature in 24 top-flight games after making the switch to Anfield from relegated club Stoke City.
However, Liverpool is in a bid to seal their first league title in three decades as well as defend their Champions League crown but Klopp has stressed the club is unwilling to offload any player this month in the winter to maintain their impeccable form.
While speaking to reporters ahead of the clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineaux Stadium, the 52-year-old German explained that the 28-year-old Shaqiri is not for sale, “The majority of December and January we had the bench full of kids, wonderful kids, but kids, so how could we think about giving people to anyone? It’s not about Shaq, it’s about everyone. We have to keep them for sorting our situation, not the situation for different clubs. If somebody would come around the corner and ask properly…but that didn’t happen. [If] they are desperate then we think but there’s absolutely no intention from our side to do anything.”
Liverpool currently holds a 13 point lead at the summit of the Premier League table with two games in hand.
