Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stated that winning the Club World Cup would be “like landing on the moon” as the Premier League leaders look to claim the trophy for the first time in the clubs illustrious history.
European champions Liverpool will face off against Copa Libertadores winners and Brazilian giants Flamengo in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup final in Doha this Saturday.
Despite being one of the most decorated clubs in world football with 18 league titles and six Champions League trophies, Liverpool has never managed to get their hands on the Club World Cup.
But this season, there is something different about the Reds as they have created a formidable side which is set to break a few records as they look to end their 30-year drought for a Premier League title.
Having won 16 out of their opening 17 Premier League games, the Merseyside giants are 10 points clear at the summit of the English table and the 52-year-old Klopp has explained that along with with the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup success, the Club World Cup win would be like landing on the moon for Liverpool,
Having never won the tournament, the Liverpool manager said, “I don’t know how you approach something that has never been done before – it is like landing on the moon, It means more to them [fans in South America] but to the players? No,”
Klopp further explained why the Club World Cup means a lot to Liverpool fans as well, “Did it mean more to Tottenham in the Champions League final? More to Chelsea [in the Super Cup final]? When our boys play football they show every time they want to win. Is it an advantage the whole country or continent wants Flamengo to win it more? I don’t know. Mexico wanted to win it more than people in England and we beat their team, so we will see.
