Lack of squad depth might hurt Liverpool, says Emile Heskey

Former Liverpool player Emile Heskey fears that Liverpool’s lack of depth in attack might cost them in their hunt for their first Premier League title in 30 years.

The Reds finished one point behind champions Manchester City last term and have made a stunning start to this campaign, winning their first six matches.

Liverpool is already five points clear of Manchester City in the table this season, but with the league only six matchdays old, there is a long way to go for Liverpool to secure the title and Heskey still believes Liverpool face a ‘tall order’ to win the title.

It’s a tall order because at this moment in time Manchester City have the best squad in terms of depth,’ Heskey told Omnisport.

‘If you take certain players out of City they’ve always got someone who can step in and do a specific job, the way the manager wants him to do it. ‘Liverpool, if you take Salah, Mane or Firmino out, it’s not quite the same, whereas City has a better blend.

‘I think City have a better midfield. I’m not saying Liverpool’s midfield is bad, by the way, I’m just saying they have a better blend and they probably give you more goals from midfield. ‘But if [Liverpool] keep the pressure on like they are doing, you never know.’

Liverpool kept their winning streak in the league going after te beat Chelsea 2-1 away from home despite a second-half fightback from the blues. Liverpool’s win means that they have extended their winning streak in the league to 16 games.
