Both teams started the game slow in the opening stages with Inter’s wing-back Denzel Dumfries the first to get a real sight of goal but his tame effort was easily collected by Alisson.

Two efforts came in quick succession for the home side through their central defenders Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk with the former rattling the crossbar from a Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery.

Heading into the half time interval, Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu forced Alisson into action with an important save to keep the scoreline nil-nil at the break.

The second period got off to a flying start from Liverpool who had Arnold drawing a good stop from Inter’s man between the sticks Handanovic.

Mohamed Salah got through on goal but the Egyptian’s strike could only hit the post as, on the other end of the pitch, Inter got the opener through talisman Lauturo Martinez.

The visitors, however, were in for a setback just minutes later with Alexis Sanchez given the marching orders for a second yellow card.

Salah again struck the woodwork of the Inter goal in the final stages of the game with Liverpool keeping it solid at the back to edge out the Italians.
