Liverpool came out as the narrow yet deserved winners over Manchester City in Sunday’s fiercely contested showdown at Anfield in the Premier League.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
It was an evenly matched affair in the first period despite there being times when the visitors looked much more threatening going forward.
Erling Haaland, in superb form since his move to City in the summer, was kept in his tracks by Liverpool’s defensive duo of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.
Diogo Jota saw his header denied by City stopper Ederson while Robertson fired an effort over the bar after Ederson had punched Milner’s cross to safety.
The second half at Anfield was more intense right from the start with a lovely move by Liverpool seeing Mo Salah slot his effort into the bottom corner only to be denied by Ederson’s fantastic save.
On the other end of the pitch, City thought they had broken the deadlock after Phil Foden found the back of the net but a VAR check disallowed the goal with Haaland fouling Fabinho in the build up.
With Jurgen Klopp ringing in a triple change from the bench, it all came down to Salah to win the game for his side after spinning away from Joao Cancelo and putting the ball past Ederson to make it 1-0 for Liverpool and secure the three points.
