The home side were the more dominant of the two sides in the opening stages of the game but the Everton backline did just enough to keep them at bay from Jordan Pickford’s goal.

A free kick from close range taken by Salah could only hit the wall while Nunez and Gakpo combined well to trouble the Everton defenders.

Everton’s James Tarkowski rattled the post from a looping header and the counter-attack that followed led to Salah opening the scoring as the Egyptian chipped Pickford to find the back of the net.

The second period also saw Everton failing to impress as Liverpool marched on in the search for a second goal which came through new boy Cody Gakpo.

Andy Robertson was brilliant in the build up and his full-back partner Trent Alexander-Arnold produced an inch perfect pass to find Gakpo at the far post who tapped in for his first Liverpool goal.

Everton substitute Tom Davies nearly got his side back in the game with the midfielder heading over the goal after being found in the box by Alex Iwobi’s cross.

A last-ditch block from Tarkowski denied Salah the opportunity to double his account for the evening as Liverpool got the past the finish line with ease to clinch the three points.
