A late goal from Joel Matip handed Liverpool the win against Ajax in Tuesday night’s Champions League group stage meeting at Anfield.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
Liverpool started the game strong with the home side under pressure to perform after last week’s thumping 4-1 defeat in the opener to Napoli.
Jurgen Klopp’s men got an early lead to enjoy come the 17th minute when Diogo Jota teed up Mo Salah tucked a finish past Remko Pasveer to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Diaz could well have doubled the advantage for his side but the Columbian winger shot his effort off target while Jota came close to scoring as well.
The visitor Ajax replied in fashion and their in-form frontman Kudus was clinical enough to leave Alisson Becker helpless between the goalposts to level the scoreline.
Pasveer denied Virgil van Dijk with a good save after the latter was set up by a corner delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the interval.
Jota was denied by Pasveer and in the later stages of the game, Klopp brought on both Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino off the bench.
In the 89th minute, it all came down to Joel Matip who leaped the highest to head Tsimikas’ corner and seal a dramatic win for the Reds.
