Leicester picked up an unexpected 1-0 lead inside the opening exchanges on Merseyside after Patson Daka laid off into space for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to slot the ball past Alisson into the back of the net.

The home side’s efforts to fashion an equaliser bore no fruit with the Leicester backline stopping the likes of Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah in their tracks from scoring.

Liverpool, however, did manage to level the affair when the Foxes centre-back Faes’s deflection lobbed over his teammate Danny Ward to end up in the net as both teams looked likely to head into the half time break with the score at 1-1.

Things took a more dramatic turn when Faes was again at fault for gifting Liverpool their lead just before the interval with Nunez’s effort hitting the goalpost and bundled into his own net by the former.

Skipper Jordan Henderson was inches away from doubling Liverpool’s advantage after executing a first time streak from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick throw .

Alisson denied Harvey Barnes from close range while Leicester’s goalscorer Dewsbury-Hall, unmarked in the Liverpool box, put his free header wide.

Nunez got an opportunity to trouble Ward in the later stages of the game but he put his effort too high as Liverpool got past the finish line to end 2022 with the three points on home turf.
