A valiant comeback from the home side ensured a 3-1 win over basement outfit Newcastle United at Anfield with Liverpool keeping pace with the league leaders Manchester City.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
Jurgen Klopp’s men were in for an early setback with Thiago Alcantara’s lapse of judgement in the attacking half allowing Newcastle to mount a counter-attack.
Thiago was again at fault in the proceeding seconds with his weak clearance falling to Jonjo Shelvey whose effort on goal gave the visitors a shock lead in only the seventh minute.
Liverpool replied in able fashion with the returning Diogo Jota scoring on the rebound after an initial save from Martin Dúbravka to level the scoreline.
Only four minutes later, Mohamed Salah was at his prolific best in front of the goal to put his strike past Dúbravka and give the hosts the lead heading into the interval.
Newcastle put out a strong defensive show for the majority of the second period but were unable to succeed in their search for the equalising goal to get back into the contest.
Dúbravka was called into action a couple of times to deny Mane and Jota with substitute Naby Keita also forcing a good stop from the Newcastle goalie.
It all came down to Trent Alexander-Arnold whose stunner of a shot from outside the box landed into the top corner and put the game to bed for the Merseysiders.
