Liverpool 3-1 Southampton : Match Report | Premier League 22-23

A brace from Darwin Nunez powered the home side Liverpool to a convincing 3-1 win over Southampton heading into the World Cup break.

The game got off to a flying start with both sides exchanging goals inside the opening ten minutes of the Anfield showdown to make for a fantastic viewing experience.

Andy Robertson’s teasing delivery into the box from a free kick was slotted into the back of the net by Roberto Firmino with Gavin Bazunu unable to deny the Brazilian.

Southampton fashioned an instant response with Che Adams heading past Alisson Becker to make it 1-1 after a James Ward-Prowse set-piece.

Liverpool reclaimed their lead in style as Nunez volleyed into the back of the net from an inch-perfect cross by the young midfielder Harvey Elliott.

Bazunu kept out Nunez’s header while Mo Salah’s rather feeble effort on goal was collected by the Southampton goalie Bazunu with ease.

Just before the half time break, Roberton turned provider once again with the wing-back setting up Nunez for a finish in the bottom corner.

The second period saw Liverpool’s backline putting up a tough display but it was Alisson Becker who was key to his side’s fortunes with the goalkeeper making two impressive saves.

Virgil van Dijk headed wide in search of Liverpool’s fourth goal of the game while Alisson made another important stop to keep out Che Adams from pulling one back for the visitors.
