Liverpool has been fined £200,000 by the EFL for fielding an ineligible player in their third-round Carabao Cup win against MK Dons last week.
Chirivella did not have the required international transfer certificate after he returned from a loan spell with the Spanish club Extremadura last season.
The Reds were under investigation and could have faced expulsion from the Carabao Cup but have gotten away with just a fine of £200,000, of which £100,000 will be suspended until the end of the 2020/21 season.
An EFL statement read: “The club’s breach was in part due to the challenges it encountered with securing the correct international clearance, and its subsequent ability to include the player on team sheets despite the lack of clearance.
“As a result, the board concluded the most appropriate sanction was a financial penalty.”
Liverpool said: “Even though there were mitigating factors, which were beyond our control or jurisdiction, we believe it appropriate we apologize to the competition’s governing body and also to Milton Keynes Dons.”
Liverpool will now face Arsenal at Anfield in the round of 16 on 29th October two days after a home clash against top-four side Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool is on a 16 game-winning run in the Premier League and is only two short of equaling Manchester City’s record of winning 18 games in a row but face a tricky run of fixtures. Liverpool takes on in-form Leicester City on Saturday followed by a trip to Old Trafford to face old rivals Manchester United.
