Liverpool closing in on the appointment of Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director

Liverpool are said to be closing in on the appointment of Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director with the German set to take over from the outgoing Julian Ward.

The Reds are eager to have Schmadtke in place for the start of the summer transfer window in which Jurgen Klopp’s side are expected to overhaul their squad following an under-par season this time around.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, Schmadtke who had emerged as a shock frontrunner to succeed Ward to the Liverpool sporting director role, is now heading to the formalities of a contract with his new club.

The 59-year-old Schmadtke is a well-respected figure within German football and it is believed that he secured solid backing from the Liverpool manager Klopp during the talks with the owners Fenway Sports Group.

Schmadtke last worked at Wolfsburg before leaving in January and his move to Liverpool will come at a time when Klopp’s squad could well do with reinforcements in defence and midfield before the next season gets underway.
