The Premier League leaders extended their winning streak to 14 games in the Premier League after a 3-1 win against Newcastle United at Anfield this Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds maintained their 100 percent win record in the Premier League and have now won five out of five to sit at the summit of the Premier League at the moment. But it was a bit of a strange start for the hosts as they allowed the visitors to grab the lead early on in the game.
Jetro Willems gave Steve Bruce’s side a shock lead at Anfield when he rifled the ball into the top of the net cutting in from the left-hand side after just seven minutes and it took a while for the Reds to get into gear. However, Newcastle didn’t really threaten at all after that goal and it took Sadio Mane 28 minutes to level the score with a lovely curling effort from the left-hand side after Andy Robertson’s pass.
The Senegalese forward was at the double just after the 40-minute mark after a howler from Newcastle United goalkeeper Dubravka and Mane pounced to put his side in the lead at half time. Liverpool was a constant threat to Newcastle in the second half and mustered plenty of chances through Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Gini Wijnaldum.
However, Roberto Firmino, who came on instead of Divock Origi in the first half, combined with Mohamed Salah with some lovely link-up play before the Egyptian secured the three points with a delightful finish into the bottom corner.
It finished 3-1 to Liverpool at the full-time whistle after the Merseyside outfit shrugged off an early scare to go five points clear at the top of the table following Manchester City’s loss against Norwich City later on that day.
