The Reds could be forced to keep hold of fringe first-team forward Divock Origi beyond this summer’s transfer window despite heavy backing for the Belgian to seal a move elsewhere to further his playing opportunities.
Origi has been a squad player for Jurgen Klopp’s side these past couple of seasons and after being handed just two top-flight outings on the starting teamsheet last campaign, there had been speculation that Liverpool will be keen on parting ways with Origi for a £20 million fee.
Reports from The Athletic, however, claim that Origi could be set for another year in the Liverpool shirt with Klopp poised to lose his star duo of Mohammad Salah and Sadio Mane this upcoming January owing to the month-long Africa Cup of Nations duty.
With Salah and Mane, both of whom are permanent fixtures in the star-studded frontline alongside Roberto Firmino, gone for a critical period in domestic football, Klopp will need to have options at hand to make up for their absence.
Despite the Liverpool boss expected to bring in a new attacking signing this summer, it is understood that with Origi’s past experience of Premier League football, he would be favoured over a fresh face in the Reds camp.
