Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been backed for a January switch to Newcastle United who are expected to make moves in the transfer market following their recent takeover.
The Magpies have been urged by Noel Whelan to eye up a move for Gomez who has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and could be looking for a transfer elsewhere come January when the transfer window reopens.
Aston Villa were rumoured to be looking at the Liverpool centre-back as a viable target for the forthcoming January window with Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard newly appointed to the top job at Villa Park.
The former Reds midfield maestro is in line to make moves in the transfer market for his new colours and reports suggest Gomez has caught the eye of Gerrard.
Noel Whelan while speaking to Football Insider reckons that the new Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe should prioritise a move for Gomez and try to build their ranks around the England international central defender for the second half of the campaign.
“You’ve seen already that Zouma has been allowed to leave Chelsea. You never say never but it would be a shock.”
“There are teams out there that need centre-half replacements. I’m looking at Newcastle for one.
“You could probably build a team around him at centre-half. He’s an amazing player and could be one of the pieces that Eddie Howe is looking for.
“But look, I mean, Joe Gomez seems to sort of player that wants to fight for his place before anything else.
“He’ll only think about his future with Liverpool if he’s not required.”
