According to the latest reports, Liverpool has decided to trigger Joel Matip’s contract and extend his stay until another season after impressive displays this term.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is set to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title once again this season as they prepare to fight tooth and nail to dethrone the Spaniard’s team as champions of England. But the German might take more than one season to achieve that and therefore he is building quite a dynasty with his Liverpool team tying down key players on long term deals.
However, one player that has been extremely vital for Liverpool over the past few months has been Cameroonian center-back Joel Matip. The 28-year-old defender has cemented his place in the heart of Liverpool’s backline alongside Virgil Van Dijk and has only shown signs of improvement this season.
Matip’s current Liverpool contract expires at the end of this season but the Merseyside giants are ready to offer him a new deal and trigger a one-year extension. The big central defender arrived at Liverpool back in the summer of 2016 from Schalke and has now nailed down a regular berth for the club following impressive displays partnering Van Dijk.
Matip has already scored two goals for Liverpool this season one in the FA Community Shield and a crucial header against Arsenal in the Premier League two weeks ago. Joe Gomez was initially Klopp’s first-choice center-back after the obvious Van Dijk but Matip seems to have proven his worth to the English side.
