With a global fanbase of more than 100 million and a rich traditional history of domination English football, it comes as no surprise that there are quite a few celebrities out there who follow the club’s success vehemently.
With Liverpool winning the Premier League after a wait of 30 years and their recent success in Europe, the global fanbase is only set to increase as the Reds find their grip back at the top of the footballing perch. Here we take a look at some well-known celebrities who have supported the club through its thick and thin.
#1: Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig who is easily recognizable for portraying Agent 007 is a born and bred Scouser. Originally hailing from Liverpool himself, the James Bond actor does not keep his adoration for the club undercover and is quite commonly seen enjoying himself during home games at Anfield.
#2: Lana Del Rey
The famous American dream pop musician and songwriter, who came into the foray of the indie music scene in the last decade, has also been spotted at numerous football games. The singer, who was nominated for an Oscar for her original cover for the film ‘The Great Gatsby”, confessed that her long time manager Ben Mawson is a huge Liverpool fan FC and convinced her to support the Reds. She has been clicked with Steven Gerrard at Anfield and also frequently wishes the team on her Twitter account.
#3: Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie has been more vocal than her ex-partner about her support for Liverpool. She started following the club when she was filming Tomb Raider in Wales, where her adopted son Maddox underwent a three-day surgery and fell in love with the Reds. In her own words, her son “only wants to play for Liverpool”, and this in turn has influenced the Hollywood actress to adore the Red scarf.
#4: Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson has been spotted celebrating the club’s victories on numerous occasions. The Taken star who originally hails from Ireland even has brought his son to the game sometimes and is a quite passionate Red according to his close ones.
#5: Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela’s respect for the club may have been influenced by John Barnes, with the South African gifting his President with a Liverpool FC jersey in 1994. Mandela had admitted back then that he was a secret admirer of the club – with John Barnes one of the first few black international players to have been given such respect and adoration at a time when racism in football was aplenty.
Interestingly, Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 coincided with Liverpool FC winning the league, although it took quite a while to repeat the feat. The club recently also held a memorial for Mandela and invited his family over for a visit to Merseyside.
#6: LeBron James
One of the biggest icons in basketball, LeBron James has been visiting Anfield since 2011, when Fenway Sports Group officially took over Liverpool that year. The 4 time MVP who has won three NBA championships has a minority stake at the company, and also holds a 2% stake at Liverpool making it rather personal for the athlete both emotionally and financially. He has been seen visiting the club numerous times and is pretty vocal on social media about the club’s victories.
#7: Caroline Wozniacki
The former Danish tennis star is a fanatic fan of the Reds and doesn’t shy away from making it known where her loyalties lie when it comes to football. She even sported a Gerrard shirt to one of her matches. The former World No. 1’s interest in football isn’t unfounded either – her father was a professional footballer in the Danish league. Wozniacki also received a personal message from Gerrard upon her retirement from tennis.
#8: Samuel L Jackson
Hollywood starrer Samuel Jackson, famous for his roles in Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained, visited Anfield for the first time in 2001 and fell in love with the atmosphere and the renditions of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. His long saga of love for the club and the city continues to this day as he celebrated Liverpool FC’s first league title win in 30 years with an ecstatic tweet.
#9: Alan Walker
Although the Norwegian DJ likes to keep his private life secret, he couldn’t help himself express his love for the Reds when he visited Anfield earlier this year and tweeted a picture of him captioned You’ll Never Walk Alone. The 22-year-old made waves in the electronic music scene after his single “Faded” became a chartbuster in 2014. He also featured in the list of Top 30 DJs across the world last year.
#10: Graeme Smith
The former cricket maestro is also an ardent Liverpool FC supporter, with him visiting Anfield many times over his career. The South African who holds numerous records in cricket, including the record of captaining the most number of Test matches along with the highest number of wins as a test captain, Smith grew up in a family of Manchester United supporters but was enchanted by Liverpool FC’s style of play, especially with King Kenny at the helm.
