Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach have declared their interest in signing Liverpool FC midfielder Marko Grujic in the summer. The Serbian midfielder would return to the Reds shortly after a two-year loan spell at Hertha Berlin.
There has been speculation in recent weeks suggesting that Liverpool FC may permanently sell Grujic in the summer. The 24-year old’s sale could raise substantial funds for Jurgen Klopp to use to strengthen the squad in the transfer window.
Grujic has excelled during his two years on loan at Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin. He became a regular starter for the side and was an important part of their midfield. The sporting director of the German club, Michael Preetz, had labelled Grujic as a very impressive player.
However, upon Grujic returning to Liverpool FC, he would find it extremely tough to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first team. There are many midfielders at the Reds such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, among others. As a result, Klopp may be tempted to sell the Serbian international on a permanent basis to sides interested in signing the midfielder.
The 24-year old Gurjic has however voiced his desire of playing for the Reds in the future. In the past, the Serbian had admitted to being hopeful of becoming a regular starter for Liverpool FC under Klopp. His performances in the Bundesliga over the past two seasons have made him more confident and experienced as a first-team player.
Liverpool FC are believed to value Grujic at €25 million. However, Monchengladbach would be willing to pay a sum of only €18 million. Such a disparity in the player’s valuation by the two sides may result in halting of negotiations.
The sale of Grujic would allow the Reds to use the money and make signings in the summer. The financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the footballing incomes hard. Thus, many top European sides are willing to pay less for players in the transfer market.
Jurgen Klopp had backed out of a seemingly close deal to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, citing the high transfer fee. Werner had then sealed a move to Chelsea FC shortly thereafter. There is much talk about Liverpool FC going another summer without making a major signing.
