Liverpool FC have decided not to extend the contract of forgotten star Nathaniel Clyne with the former first-choice right back set to leave the Premier League leaders at the end of June.
The Reds have chosen not to extend Clyne’s stay at the club even until the end of the current Premier League season which will resume shortly. A short-term contract has been given to many players across several Premier League teams which enables the sides to retain their players until the end of the current campaign.
Clyne’s current contract is set to expire on 30th June, after which the English defender would become a free agent and consider his future options.
The 29-year old Clyne has not played a single minute of competitive football this season in the Liverpool FC shirt after suffering a series of injuries which have curtailed his playing time on the pitch and made him an obsolete figure in the present Liverpool FC squad.
Moreover, the player spent the second half of the 2019-20 Premier League season on loan at English side AFC Bournemouth. At that time, Clyne had agreed to make the switch to Bournemouth expecting a position in the starting lineup and a chance to revive his injury-ridden career.
Clyne had been displaced as the first choice Reds right back by the fantastic Trent Alexander Arnold, whose development as a player has been contributed majorly by Jurgen Klopp’s faith in the young full-back. Arnold’s rise to stardom as a player has impact Clyne’s position within the Liverpool FC squad.
Moreover, fellow English international Joe Gomez’s ability to play as a right-back and the future of academy graduate Neco Williams looking promising have led Klopp choosing not to offer Clyne an extension at the Merseyside club. Furthermore, reports have stated that the German coach has ordered Clyne to take part in training individually during the remaining portion his time left as a Reds player.
Clyne signed for Liverpool FC back in 2015 for a fee of £12.5 million from Premier League side Southampton FC. His arrival was greatly anticipated by the Reds supporters and he was seen as the ideal replacement for former Reds full-back Glen Johnson.
Clyne has gone on to make 77 league appearances in the Reds shirt and has scored one goal. The player has also been capped fourteen times by the England national team and was once their first-team right back.
