Liverpool identify Boca Juniors midfielder as potential transfer target

Liverpool is looking at 21-year-old Boca Juniors midfielder Alan Varela as a possible midfield option to bring to Anfield this summer window.

According to reputable sources from Argentina, Liverpool scouts were present at the Argentine Primera Division match between Boca Juniors and Tigre, judging if Alan would be a good fit for the Reds.

Alan Varela debuted for the South American outfit’s first team in 2020 against Independiente. Ever since that, he has been a constant in the team, making a total of 102 appearances across all competitions. In the ongoing Argentinian League season, he has made 1.3 interceptions per game and 1.9 tackles per game with a passing success rate of 89%.

Varela’s reported release clause stands at £11.7 million, making him a relatively cheaper option for Liverpool. If this signing is successful, it will follow the trend of the Reds snapping up midfielders at low prices in the currently inflated transfer market.

Varela is being scouted by several other European clubs, including Newcastle United and FC Barcelona. Liverpool are also said to have been scouting the player since March. The 21-year-old was instrumental in Boca’s 2021/22 title-winning campaign, but the club have since had a steep decline, currently languishing at 11th place.

This signing would continue the trend of Premier League clubs looking at South America as a viable talent hub. Clubs like Manchester City and Brighton have signed elite talents such as Julian Alvarez and Moises Caicedo for modest fees, and the gamble seems to have paid off more often than not.
