Liverpool are the latest club to approach Dries Mertens for a transfer in the upcoming summer transfer season if he doesn’t renew his Napoli’s contract.
It is highly reported that many big football clubs with the likes of Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan, and English club Chelsea are after the Belgian attacker.
The Belgium international will be a free agent in the summer, as negotiations over an extension have seemingly ground to a halt after some reported disputes with his current club Napoli which is based in Naples, Italy.
Chelsea and Inter have never disguised their interest in Mertens, and even made proposals in January transfer window but Frank Lampard is keen to bring the forward to England to boost the experience of his front-line after this season.
Now, many Italian reports and sources claim that Liverpool have also putting forward an offer to sign Mertens as a free agent at the end of the season.
Dries Mertens joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven based in Eindhoven, Netherlands which plays in the Eredivisie league, in 2013. He scored a record goals of 121 goals in his 319 appearances for the Naples club over a course of seven years and even played a huge role in Napoli’s Coppa Italia title win in 2014.
Mertens, who turns 33 next month has scored 12 goals in 29 games for Napoli this season, including six goals in seven Champions League match appearances.
He had plenty of opportunity to show off against Liverpool, scoring two goals in the last three encounters with the club. The 32 year old had even scored a beautiful goal against Liverpool during this year’s UEFA Champions League season at Anfield by breaking down the invincible defense of the Reds.
The Belgian forward provides versatility and ability to play as a quick centre-forward or in a wider role which are crucial and important traits for the Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp’s transfer checklist.
With the possible departure of Xherdan Shaqiri from the club after this season, the transfer of Mertens guarantees stability and experience in the attacking department and opening up many more striking options for the manager.
