Liverpool are reportedly ahead of FC Barcelona in the race to sign defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria from Borussia Monchengladbach come next summer.
The Swiss international’s contract with the Bundesliga outfit is set to expire at the end of the season and he has not been keen on extending terms with Liverpool keeping close tabs on his services.
According to reports from Spanish news outlet El Nacional, it is claimed that the 25-year-old Zakaria will favour a move to Anfield over the prospect of playing under the newly appointed coach Xavi at Camp Nou.
Jurgen Klopp has been tipped to bring in a fresh face for his midfield roster which had the long-serving Gini Wijnaldum depart in this summer’s transfer window over wage concerns to sign for French side Paris Saint-Germain.
Wijnaldum’s exit left Klopp an influential presence short in the centre of the park and it is understood that a player of Zakaria’s ability is what the Liverpool boss is after in the market to bolster his ranks in the summer of 2022.
