According to Liverpool FC great Steve Nicol, rumored target Thiago Alcantara “does not fit the mould” at Anfield. The ex-Reds fullback believes that the Bayern midfielder’s style of play does not fit the requirements of Jurgen Klopp’s side’s midfield department.
The 29-year old Thiago is seemingly edging closer to signing for Liverpool FC ahead of the 2020-21 season. Bayern Munich have no choice other than sanctioning the sale of the Spanish international this summer after reports suggested that Thiago had refused to extend his stay at the German giants.
However, Nicol’s recent remarks indicate the ESPN FC pundit’s doubt that the Bayern star may not thrive at the Reds. Despite admitting that the Spaniard was indeed a great player with a fantastic eye for a pass, Nicol made note of Liverpool FC’s current midfield being characterized by tireless energy and high-work rate.
“I think he’s a great footballer and he can pass the ball. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t fit the mould of what Liverpool do in the middle of the park right now,”
The ex-Scottish international suspects that Jurgen Klopp’s adopted style of gegenpressing play at the Merseyside club may not be to Thiago’s liking.
“Yes, he’s got ability, but he also has to have dynamism, he has to have legs, he has to close down quickly, he’s got to have energy.
“Those are things that all those players in the middle of the park for Liverpool have. That isn’t Alcantara.
Nicol added that Liverpool FC’s desire to sign the former FC Barcelona star may stem from Klopp’s intention of fortifying his side’s squad depth. Thiago may be used as a rotation option by the Reds boss in cup fixtures, according to the pundit.
“At the same time, having a player like that to bring on, he can play in the FA Cup, the League Cup, you can bring him on and give him half an hour to pass the ball around.
