Liverpool are reportedly lining up the veteran German football executive Jörg Schmadtke as their new sporting director ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to a report from Telegraph Sport, it is claimed that the 59-year-old Schmadtke has emerged as the shock frontrunner for the Liverpool sporting director job which will fall vacant once Julian Ward leaves at the end of the season.
The German has worked at Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg previously and his appointment to the Liverpool role would come amid speculation that the Reds are planning a busy summer window to overhaul their squad.
Schmadtke has earned plaudits for his recruitment that is of value for the budget he is assigned by the club and the same will be expected of him should he make the move to the Merseyside later this year.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are seeking reinforcements in defence and midfield after a disappointing season this term despite the club rallying of late and keeping alive their chances of securing a top four finish in the league.
