Liverpool name 24-man squad for this season’s Champions League campaign

Liverpool FC have named a 24-man squad for the Merseyside club’s UEFA Champions League commitments for the course of the 2020-21 season, according to Sky Sports reports.

A number of first-team star regulars of Jurgen Klopp’s side feature amongst the 24 enlisted by the Reds to go out on the pitch and compete for European glory, however, there are a few surprise inclusions and exclusions due to the squad restrictions imposed by UEFA.

With the guidelines released by UEFA requiring that each club name a maximum of 25 players, eight of whom should be ‘homegrown and four of those having been trained at the club for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21’.

In accordance with such rules laid down by the European footballing body, Klopp had to make some adjustments to his first-team squad gunning for Champions League glory, merely a season after Liverpool FC’s winning run in the 2018-19 Champions League campaign.

Xherdan Shaqiri makes the cut following his move away from Anfield this summer falling through at the last moment, meaning that the Swiss international’s future in the Reds shirt was extended beyond October’s deadline day.

However, Harry Wilson, the 23-year old winger, fails to find himself amongst the 24 players selected by Klopp, with Takumi Minamino, Diogo Jota, and Harvey Elliot being chosen at the expense of the Welsh international, whose move to Burnley failed to materialise in the last days of the summer transfer window.
