Watford first-teamer Ismaila Sarr was on the verge of putting pen to paper on a deal with Liverpool FC in the January transfer window, reveals the player’s agent.
According to reports from Goal, Sarr’s agent Thierno Seydi said that the Reds had been very keen on landing the Senegalese international’s signature and despite all formalities being subject to a close, Jurgen Klopp’s outfit could not fork out the funds to complete Sarr’s transfer.
“With Liverpool, a few days ago, we were at the stage of signing the contract that would tie the Reds to Ismaila Sarr.
“Everything was sorted: the monthly wages and the length of the deal. I’d even asked Sadio Mane to find him an apartment.
“But it in the end, they weren’t able to put the €40 million (£35m/$49m) on the table to finalise the deal.
Seydi’s disclosure confirms the previously existing speculation that Jurgen Klopp was on the hunt for attacking reinforcements in the open year transfer window as the Premier League holder’s title-defence campaign took a major hit due to the worsening form of their first-team options in the frontline.
The likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have failed to hit their yesteryear standings in front of the goal and the Hornets star Sarr, a long-term target for the Merseysiders, would have fit the bill for Klopp’s preferred addition to Anfield.
