Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards contacted Ligue 1 outfit Lille over a transfer deal for Nicolas Pepe but insisted that the Premier League giants have no interest in signing the 24-year-old attacker this summer.
Liverpool enjoyed a thrilling season in the Premier League last term as they recorded the most points ever since the club was formed back in 1892. However, the Reds still finished in second place in the league table, just one solitary point behind eventual champions Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp is reportedly eager to bolster his squad for the upcoming season and wants to add further firepower to his attacking department and after winning the Champions League; the German wants to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s side as Premier League champions.
Recently, there were rumors which claimed that Liverpool was linked with the signing of Lille forward Nicolas Pepe in the summer after the Ivorian winger had a stellar season with the French outfit. Pepe netted 22 goals and notched up 11 assists as well for Lille helping them to a 2nd place finish on the Ligue 1 table.
However, any possible transfer to Liverpool has been shut down as the Reds sporting director Michael Edwards spoke to Lille manager Christophe Galtier last month in a bid to stop the bizarre rumors that have been baffling fans all across the world.
Liverpool has signed only one player this summer and Klopp has admitted that the club will not be matching the £170 million transfer spend they splashed out last year for some star acquisitions. The 52-year-old German spoke to Liverpool Echo and said, “It’s not easy. I said last year that to improve the team is not easy with reasonable money. With crazy money, you always can do it – okay, you pay whatever you want, then it’s possible. We are not a club like that. We cannot do that. We are really wealthy but we cannot do what some other teams are doing. That’s how it is. But we don’t have to. We have to find solutions during the season. Yes, you find sometimes the solution in the transfer market and we have done that. I don’t have to name the players, everybody knows. But otherwise you have to find the solutions on the training ground and that’s what we do now.”
