Gini Wijnaldum’s current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season, will reportedly be seen out by Liverpool FC. The latest speculation indicates the Anfield outfit have no keen desire on extending the 29-year old midfielder’s contract that will expire next summer.
Such a decision on part of the Merseyside club could be done to accommodate the potential arrival of Thiago Alcantara in this summer’s transfer window. The Bayern Munich midfielder is rumored to be very close to signing for the Reds after refusing to extend terms with the Bundesliga giants.
However, Thiago’s arrival at Anfield would mean a rather over-stocked midfield department at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal. Moreover, the Spanish international’s signing is expected to be a regular starter for the Reds next season.
With Wijnaldum being the only star player among Klopp’s men whose deal expires in 2021, it is understood that Liverpool FC will not stand in the player’s way should the Dutchman want to join another club on a pre-contract agreement in January.
Ronald Koeman’s appointment as the new FC Barcelona boss has further fueled rumors of Wijnaldum’s Anfield exit. The ex-Dutch national team coach is believed to be wanting to sign the 29-year old to replenish the aging midfield of the La Liga giants.
