Liverpool open talks to land Sokratis Papastathopoulos following his Arsenal exit

Ex-Arsenal first-teamer Sokratis Papastathopoulos has reportedly been the subject of interest from an injury-hit Liverpool FC, according to the Daily Mail.

The Greek international defender terminated his deal with the Gunners earlier this month with mutual consent after having fallen down massively the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium and a number of clubs across Europe were put on alert to Sokratis’s availability on a free transfer.

Jurgen Klopp’s Merseyside outfit are also understood to be amongst the interested parties, with season-ending injury layoffs for Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez believed to have forced the Liverpool FC gaffer to enquire about his former Dortmund player in order to shore up a depleted defensive line at Anfield.

There are suggestions that the 32-year-old central defender may prefer a move to his homeland as local outfit Olympiacos lead the race to sign the ex-Arsenal man.

Liverpool FC’s business in the ongoing transfer window has been criticised by many, including former Anfield employees Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher, with the general consensus being that Klopp has to bring in additional reinforcements for the Merseysiders to sail through a greatly troubling period in Premier League action.
