Liverpool is looking increasingly confident in their pursuit of Gabri Veiga and is confident that they can beat fellow Premier League giant Chelsea to his signature.
According to reports from the club, Liverpool has an optimistic outlook on Veiga’s transfer saga. The club’s hierarchy thinks that they have the “upper hand” in signing the young Spanish midfielder. However, things looking good right now may not mean much if the Reds don’t end up signing him, which is also a very real possibility.
Veiga’s current club, Celta Vigo, have slapped a £34m price tag on the player. However, looking at his technical ability and prowess in the middle of the park, that fee sounds reasonable for a young midfielder who can go on to become a world-beater in the future.
The 21-year-old helped save Celta Vigo from the disgrace of falling into the second division of the Spanish football pyramid by scoring 11 goals and contributing to 4 assists in what was somewhat of a breakout season for him. Due to his efforts, the club narrowly avoided relegation by just 3 points, in what was considered one of La Liga’s best relegation races in recent times.
Liverpool may very well end up signing him in the end, but the transfer currently faces two major roadblocks – other clubs are also just as interested, and the player is hesitant to decide until after the U-21 World Cup.
Napoli and Chelsea have made their admiration for the player very clear. However, all three clubs that are currently in for the player are waiting to see his performance with the U-21 Spanish side before committing to break his £34m release clause.
