Edwards Eyed for Liverpool Return as Klopp Era Ends

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owners of Liverpool, opened talks with Michael Edwards in Boston in which they discussed his possibility of coming back to the club with the post-Jürgen Klopp era in mind. On Sunday, the meeting was attended by the owner of FSG and the president among the other top officials within the organization.

The owners of the club wanted to persuade Edwards, the former sporting director, to return to play a crucial part in the construction of Liverpool’s future which Klopp is slated to leave this summer. Edwards, who departed Liverpool in 2022 and is currently a is a consultant at Ludonautics, is perceived by FSG as the right figure to guide the club’s transformation process.

But, on the other hand, it would not be enough to get back Edwards and the owners had better give him a position more meaningful than that of a sporting director. Edwards has turned down offers from more than one club, among which are the clubs from Chelsea as well as from Liverpool where he spent a decade and made a great contribution to the club during Klopp’s initial euphoria.

What is the recent speculation around the transfer of Michael Edwards?

In January, he turned down the first offer from FSG for him to come back as Liverpool’s sporting director. Edwards will most certainly look for that position which will bring him more leverage and that could be head of football operations.

As a possible candidate for the position, he will be responsible for hiring and analytics. He will be tasked with appointing another sporting director as well as Liverpool’s new coach, with Xabi Alonso’s name being among the top contenders for succession after Klopp.

It is believed that the football team structure in the new club would develop in a matter of upcoming weeks, with Alonso being the leader to be in the manager’s seat. In contrast, Liverpool has been very careful, taking into account that Alonso is still being probed by Bayern Munich. It is to this end that Liverpool has not publicly pursued him. Although no official offer is being tabled, Alonso is aware of the interest of Liverpool, but there are no open talks currently to invite him to join the club.
