Liverpool FC still very much remain in the fray to claim a second successive Premier League title this season should the Merseyside club sign a new centre-back in the upcoming winter transfer window, said former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are left with only Joel Matip as the fully fit central defender after injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Fabinho left the German with no other options to turn to in these times of crisis, having already offloaded Dejan Lovren this past summer to Zenit.
“I think if Liverpool buy a centre back, and a good one, in January, I think they’ll take some stopping, I really do.
“Defensively, they have injury problems in that position (centre back), and if they rectify that in January, I think Liverpool would be my favourites.
“But right now I think it’s 50/50 between them and Man City because of Liverpool’s injuries and the setback of Virgil Van Dijk, said Carragher, as quoted by Goal.
However, despite a number of injury issues accumulating for the Champions of England, Carragher believes Liverpool FC are still the favourites, alongside Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, to lift the Premier League trophy come the May of 2021.
Several top names in the defensive bracket such as Schalke’s Ozan Kabak and Brighton first-teamer Ben White have been linked with a January switch to Anfield, however, for now, Jurgen Klopp has refrained from making any further commitment towards his forthcoming transfer plans.
