Liverpool are in line to withdraw from the race to sign Real Madrid attacking midfielder Marco Asensio this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer guru has sounded out a big claim that Liverpool are happy with their squad in place at the moment and would decide against going head to head with other suitors in the transfer market for the wantaway La Liga star Asensio.
Asensio’s name had been tipped to be on Jurgen Klopp’s shopping list for this summer with the Liverpool boss on the hunt for reinforcements in the attacking third in light of Sadio Mane joining German champions Bayern Munich.
Darwin Nunez’s arrival from Benfica, however, could prove to be the signing of much importance to Liverpool who have forked out a potential club-record transfer fee to sign the 34-goal frontman to provide firepower in front of the goal.
Speaking to German news outlet wettfreunde, Romano said that Liverpool would not be making a concrete approach to the Real camp for Asensio with Jurgen Klopp happy with his business so far as he looks to plan contract extensions for some key players.
“I think that would be really difficult.
“It could maybe be something for the end of the transfer window, in case Liverpool decide to change their position. But at the moment they say internally that they are happy with the squad they have.
“It could depend on the impact of the young players who signed them. For example, Fabio Carvalho, who was fantastic in the league at Fulham and who is believed to be ready for the first team to play at the highest level at Liverpool.
“Of course, while we’re preparing, we’ll have to wait and see how it develops and everything else. Nothing is in sight for Marco Asensio as Liverpool are very happy with Darwin, Carvalho and Ramsay.
“They are very happy with their transfer window. They are already thinking about new contract extensions. They plan for the future and not just for the present.”
