Premier League pacesetters Liverpool should be awarded the Premier League title if the season cannot be completed due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to ex-Manchester United shot-stopper Mark Bosnich.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has a 25-point lead atop the table ahead of 2nd placed Manchester City, winning 27 of 29 games, when the campaign was suspended last month. The Reds need only six more points or two more wins to win their first title in 30 years.
However, as a result of the unprecedented situation, it remains to be seen when, and if, the season will resume, leading to debate over what should happen if the cannot be completed. There were rumours of the season being deemed null and void but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has claimed that he cannot see a scenario in which Liverpool are not awarded the Premier League title.
Mark Bosnich, who had two spells at Old Trafford and also played for Chelsea and Aston Villa, believes that Klopp’s unit should be awarded a first league title since 1990.
While speaking to Stats Perform, the former Australia international goalkeeper said, that rivalries aside, Liverpool should be awarded the title even if the rules of the Premier League claim otherwise, “They should be awarded the title, There may be, deep in the by-rules of the Premier League that says maybe they don’t or whatever, but I think it’s only fair and only right that they’re awarded the title.”
Bosnich also reiterated his statement and explained that Liverpool was never going to be caught due to their unassailable lead at the summit, “Let’s all be frank, they weren’t going to be caught.”
Klopp’s unit has been in tremendous form this season and were on course to break the 100 point record that Man City set in the 2017-18 season before the deadly bug halted football almost all across Europe.
