Jordan Henderson brought up his first goal in the England shirt and it was a long wait coming to a close for the Reds skipper as Gareth Southgate’s men secured a convincing 4-0 win over Ukraine.
Andriy Shevchenko’s men were no match for The Three Lions in the quarter-finals clash of the UEFA European Championships with Harry Kane and Co. putting out a terrific showing on all fronts to book their spot in the last four of the tournament.
Henderson was the fourth and final scorer for his side after Kane had got on the scoresheet twice and Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire too had added to England’s advantage.
The Liverpool man tucked in a header from the corner delivery into the back of the net to bring up his first international goal in what was his 62nd outing for The Three Lions.
Speaking to ITV after the match, Henderson voiced his delight at having broken his barren run in front of the goal as he admitted it was a very good night for England with their focus now on the semi-final clash against Denmark come Wednesday.
“A very good night. So pleased for the performance level and a great start in the early goal and we kicked on from there. We defended well as a team, scored great goals, created great chances.
“We have to be pleased with the overall performance. We have a big game Wednesday, we need to recover well and give everything on Wednesday.
“It’s been a long time coming. I felt one was coming. I thankfully managed to get on the scoresheet. I’m delighted for the lads, the effort tonight was fantastic and will give us good momentum going into the next game. I tried to counter the best I can.
“On the pitch, I don’t need to score more goals and there’s other players to do that. I need to concentrate on my job. I would like to have scored more goals over the last few years. I managed to get one today which is always nice.”
