Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson opens up on Sadio Mane’s departure

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson admitted it was difficult saying farewell to Sadio Mane who left Anfield this summer to sign for Bayern Munich.

Mane brought curtains down on his six-year-long stint in the Liverpool colours to make the move to the Bavarian giants Bayern for a transfer fee of £28.8 million but Jurgen Klopp was quick to line up a quality replacement for his outgoing star.

Uruguay international Darwin Nunez, on the back of his 34-goal campaign last term for Benfica, joined Liverpool in a club-record transfer to provide firepower to Klopp’s forward lineup much to the delight of the Anfield faithful.

Nunez’s arrival was praised by his captain Jordan Henderson, who in an interview with The Athletic, expressed hope that the Liverpool new boy will fit right in and make an impact with his displays in front of the goal.

Henderson also reflected upon Mane heading out the exit door to join Bayern with the England international labelling the latter as a ‘world-class’ forward.

“Darwin performed well and scored in both games.

“That’s probably a big reason why we signed him, but also the recruitment staff will have watched him in plenty of other games and will have seen a lot of quality. Hopefully, he can settle in and hit the ground running.

“He’s a new option and a new dimension for us with the way we play and we’ve got to adapt to that quickly. This group has shown in the past that it is easy to settle in quickly, he can already speak with some of the lads and hopefully he can pick up English quickly.

“It was always going to be difficult losing Sadio because he’s world-class — one of the best forwards in the world. We were sad to see him leave but we wish him all the best.”
