Jordan Henderson is unfazed by Roy Keane’s recent marks over his selection for the upcoming UEFA European Championships in spite of his injury troubles since the early days of the year.
Henderson had sustained a groin injury in February which sidelined him for the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign for Liverpool but the 30-year-old made the cut for England’s 26-man squad chosen by Gareth Southgate for the Euros.
The Reds skipper was missing in action from England’s friendly fixture against Austria last week which prompted player-turned-pundit Keane to issue a damning verdict as to why Henderson was made available for international duty despite amid speculation over his fitness.
Responding to the jibe made against him, Henderson has claimed that he and Southgate were in possession of a bit more detail of his injury issue than Keane and that he was raring to go into the Euros on the back of his recent injury niggles.
“To be fair to Roy, he can say what he wants about me,” Henderson said to The Guardian.
“He give us me debut and I wouldn’t be here without him giving us that.
“He can say whatever he wants about me. I found it quite funny, actually.
“So, yeah, listen, we know a little bit more detail, I know more detail and so does the manager, which Roy may not.
“But in terms of stuff like that, everyone’s going to have an opinion, everybody’s going to think they know better than everybody else.
“But for me all my focus has been on the last couple of months is working as hard as I possibly can to be in a position where I can contribute in the tournament and I’m very thankful I’m in that position now.”
“You probably wouldn’t know, but I’ve trained for a long time.”
“When everyone was off I continued to work on my own and then picked up training with England again.
“That period has been really good for me, the intensity has stepped up the last few weeks. I feel really good and hopefully I can be ready whenever called upon.”
