Virgil van Dijk insists he is not bothered by the criticism directed towards him by Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher following last weekend’s game against Leeds United.
The Reds’ opening fixture of the 2020-21 season against Marco Bielsa’s side turned out to be an edge of the seat encounter between the two sides, with the defending Premier League champions edging out the visitors by just one goal in a 4-3 victory.
However, Van Dijk did not have the best of games in the Liverpool FC shirt, despite getting on the scoresheet. The 29-year old was responsible was gifting Leeds United their second goal of the afternoon after his misjudgment of an aerial ball lead to Patrick Bamford scoring for his side.
The Dutch international’s error-prone defensive display at the Anfield showdown came under the lens of a number of people, particularly Carragher, who termed Van Dijk as ‘arrogant’.
Upon being asked to respond to the ex-Reds’ centre-back’s remarks on his performance, the star defender chose to ignore the scepticism and admitted his fault in letting the opposition score an equalizer early on in the first half.
He said: “It was one of those… they are situations that can happen.
“I always try to do my best and that’s what I did. Unfortunately a goal came from it but I don’t worry about that.”
“No one wants to concede goals but it was intense for both teams. We trained for that and we knew that could happen.
Van Dijk will surely be looking forward to putting last weekend’s one-off showing behind him when the Reds visit Stamford Bridge this upcoming Saturday to face a new-look Chelsea side for the second game week of the 2020-21 Premier League season.
