Liverpool touch base with Serie A giants Napoli for midfielder Piotr Zielinski

Serie A heavyweights Napoli have been approached by Liverpool for the Poland international Piotr Zielinski who is a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side in this summer’s transfer window.

The Merseyside Reds remain on the lookout for a new signing to bolster their midfield ranks which has lost the long-serving presence of Gini Wijnaldum upon his Anfield exit and subsequent transfer to Paris Saint-Germain on a three-year deal.

Reports from Calciomercato claim that joining Liverpool with an interest in signing the 27-year-old Zielinski are arch-rivals and Premier League holders Manchester City who also have been backed to use the transfer window to bring in a new face in the centre of the park.

Zielinski came close to sealing a move to Merseyside in the summer of 2016 when the Polish midfielder was at Udinese, however, he ended up joining Napoli for whom he has been a star turn over the years and made his name as one of the biggest midfield talents in the Serie A.

His current deal at Napoli runs until the end of the 2023-2024 campaign meaning Napoli will not be forced into accepting a cut-price offer but instead could be willing to play the hardball on sanctioning his sale to the interested parties.
