Liverpool edged the keenly anticipated match at Wembley by 2 goals to 1 courtesy of goals from Wijnaldum and Firmino. Tottenham got one back for themselves when Lamela slammed home from a tight angle in 2nd half added time.
It took Liverpool as much as thirty seconds to find the back of the net when Firmino knocked a Alexander Arnold cross. The goal was however disallowed as Mane tried to get a touch on it while in an offside position hence interrupting the game.
The game was in no means high quality as both teams found it difficult to find their feet. Both teams were pressing as high as they could and were unable to hold possession for long.
It was Tottenham who held the majority of the ball for the first half without actually creating any real openings.
Liverpool, meanwhile scored from an unlikely source. Vorm came out to claim a corner but made a mess of it. The ball remained in the 6 yard box and Wijnaldum managed to turn it over the line.
Tottenham failed to gather any real purpose as they gave away sloppy passes in abundance.
The second half began with Mane demanding an excellent save from Vorm. However, it didn’t take a lot of time for Liverpool to double their lead after amazing work from Robertson and Mane on the left got the ball practically rolling on the goal line.
Tottenham started to gain some possesion with the introduction of Lamela and Son. They still continued to fail in creating chances as all their attacks broke down at the edge of the Liverpool 18 yard box.
Tottenham continued to pile on some pressure in the final 10 minutes. 5 minutes were added on much to the surprise of Liverpool fans as there was not much stoppage in the play throughout the half.
They earned a corner in the 3rd minute of stoppage time when Lamela found a lot of space and slammed home a volley from a tight angle. It gave Tottenham some hope but they were unable to gain a point in a big 6 match.
A well deserved victory for the Reds when both teams looked surprisingly under-prepared.
