Ex-Reds defender Dominic Matteo believes that Jurgen Klopp will be in the market this summer to sign a striker and a midfielder for his title-winning squad.
Despite initial reports that Liverpool FC will be inactive in this summer’s transfer window, the Reds have already confirmed the capture of Greek international Kostas Tsimikas. The left-back will arrive at Anfield to provide cover for Andy Robertson, according to reports.
However, Matteo expects the 2019-20 Premier League champions to strengthen their squad depth further ahead of the upcoming season. He voiced the need for players with an impeccable mindset turning out to successful signings for the Reds.
“I think every club likes to freshen up but with Jurgen Klopp it’s got to be the right kind of player, the right characteristics.
“When you play for a club like Liverpool you have to have a certain way of playing, a certain way of living your life.
“There’s so much pressure playing for a club like Liverpool and I’ve seen people come to Liverpool and they haven’t managed to get to the heights that you expect them to get to.
The former Scottish international added that Klopp will be looking to add another striker to his first-team squad to provide competition for Roberto Firmino up front. Moreover, a creative-minded midfield talent is also required at Anfield, according to Matteo.
“I think they will strengthen. I’m not sure who that is but maybe another centre-forward and maybe another midfield player.
Matteo’s expectations may actually prove to be true considering the recent rumors surrounding Liverpool FC’s transfer business this summer. Jurgen Klopp’s side have eyed a move for an alternate attacking option and have been linked with Watford star Ismaila Sarr.
As for the concerns regarding lack of creative midfield options at the club, Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara remains Klopp’s major target ahead of the upcoming 2020-21 season. The Spaniard is believed to be very close to signing for the Reds before the transfer window closes in early October.
