Liverpool will not enter race to sign Lionel Messi, says Jamie Carragher

Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher believes his former side will not be in the fray to make a move for wantaway superstar Lionel Messi. The FC Barcelona hitman handed in a transfer request at the La Liga giants earlier this week stating his desire of seeking a move elsewhere before the current transfer window comes to an end.

A number of top clubs across Europe such as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan are being considered the likely candidates to land the 33-year old’s signature. Jurgen Klopp’s side too find themselves being speculated as a dark horse to sign Messi; reports suggest.

However, Carragher does not think the Premier League champions will show any interest in an attempt to sign the six-time Ballon D’Or winner. Instead, the ex-English international tipped Manchester City to be the favorites to sign Messi due to the club’s financial clout and the presence of Pep Guardiola, the player’s former coach, at the Etihad Stadium.

An inability of the Reds’ to match Messi’s astronomically high wages combined with Klopp’s style of play being different than the FC Barcelona star man’s own would mean that the Merseyside club would steer clear of making a move for the player, expressed the 42-year old Carragher.

‘I don’t think Liverpool will go anywhere near that situation. Financially, number one, but also because of the way Liverpool play. They’re a lot more energetic maybe than City. City are more technical and that would suit Messi a bit more.’

‘But how you get that deal across the line with the figures involved, I’m not too sure. It’s mind-boggling.’
