Liverpool will not sign another centre-back this summer, confirms Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool FC will not be in the transfer market for now to sign defensive reinforcements, expressed the club’s boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds fell one centre-back option short in their first-team squad when Dejan Lovren sealed a move to Russia to sign for Zenit after plummeting down the pecking order at Anfield in recent seasons. Lovren’s departure left Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip, as the only three senior centre-back’s at Klopp’s disposal.

However, recent injuries to both Gomez and Matip, the latter being sidelined for a long duration, meant that defensive midfielder Fabinho filled in at centre-back during Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win over Chelsea last week, in what proved to be a match-winning display from the Brazillian international.

Despite persistent speculation that the Reds could end up making their fourth summer signing in the form of a quality defender to boost their squad depth, Klopp has ruled out any further additions to the first-team squad at Anfield.

“I don’t expect a lot to be honest, said the German coach ahead of Liverpool FC’s clash against Arsenal on Monday.

“You think you are well covered, we have three absolutely top, top, top centre-halves, young players in line, Fabinho in the back hand if you want and then all of a sudden three players are out for a few days and that is not nice.

“But you cannot solve that in the transfer market. That is just not possible. We will not even try if nothing more serious happens. I hope we don’t have to try that.
