The home side were on the front foot right away and had the first chance on goal through Raheem Sterling which had Alisson Becker called into action to make the save.

City soon got the lead and it came through Kevin de Bruyne who took an ambitious shot which took a huge deflection off Joel Matip and ended up into the back of the net.

Liverpool responded in style through Diogo Jota’s calm finish past Ederson with the former teed up by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s volleyed cut-back.

It was defensive brilliance on both ends of the pitch which curtailed the scoreline from advancing but the hosts restored their lead before the break with striker Jesus running in behind the Liverpool defence and scoring to make it 2-1.

The visitors were the side on top when the second period got underway with Sadio Mane levelling the affair after Mohamed Salah found his attacking partner with a sublime pass.

Ederson kept out Jota’s effort while City seemingly made it 3-2 through Sterling only for a VAR check to chalk off the strike for offside.

Klopp rang in changes from the bench but the scoreline was to remain intact for the final stages as Riyadh Mahrez scooped his attempt over in the last seconds.
