Alisson Becker was called into action to deny his compatriot Jesus twice in quick succession with City hoping to amp up the pressure on Liverpool.
Salah missed a glorious opportunity in the attacking third while on the other end of the pitch, Bernardo Silva tapped in at the back post to reduce the deficit to just one goal.
Liverpool, however, got past the finish line to claim a memorable semi-final win over their arch-rivals and secure a return to Wembley for the next month.
