Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan played down the recent talk that has linked him with a move to Anfield under his former boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Germany international midfielder is out of contract at the Etihad at the end of the season and with no update over his renewal talks, Liverpool had been credited with an interest in moving in for his services.
Speaking to Kicker, however, Gundogan dismissed speculation of him being keen on signing for Manchester City’s arch rivals Liverpool as the German voiced his praise for Klopp whom he had worked before during their days at Dortmund.
“I think I can rule out that happening.
“Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Kloppo. But I’ve been at City for a few years now. And now as City captain to rival Liverpool? No, I can not imagine [it].”
Liverpool will be sure to look elsewhere for reinforcements to bolster an under-fire midfield roster that has come under censure this season owing to increasing injury troubles and the presence of ageing names in James Milner and Jordan Henderson.
Jurgen Klopp’s long-standing transfer target in the shape of Dortmund starlet Jude Bellingham would certainly not be an easy signing to pull off with Europe’s biggest clubs queuing up to land the Englishman’s signature come next summer.
